Dr. Sheela Bai Pannir Selvam has served for the Ministry of Health since 1998. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Jawaharlal Institute of Post Medical Education and Research, Pondycherry , India, in 1998 and MMed (Family Medicine) from University of Malaya in 2010. She is currently working as a Family Medicine Specialist in Klinik Kesihatan Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.

 

She was responsible for the first successful STI Client Friendly Unit (The Anggerik Unit) in a government primary care clinic in Malaysia in 2014. The Anggerik Unit is now a benchmark for other states in Malaysia with 3800 new registered clients on regular follow up.  Due to the success of the Anggerik Unit, she now runs a heavy HIV clinic with an increment of 15 new HIV cases a month. She has a special interest in STI and HIV management in primary care with a focus on reduction of stigma towards the Key Population at health care facilities.

 

Since 2014, Dr. Sheela has been running an annual modified SOGIE (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression) workshop at her clinic, to increase the awareness of the healthcare workers. In 2018, this workshop was recognized by the Ministry of Health and the national HOPE Module (Hentikan Stigma & Diskriminasi kepada ODHA dan Populasi Tertumpu) was created the same year.
